2. TWENTY FABULOUS 2-WAY HAIRDOS
Don't just sit there and dream ... do something!
You've figured out your figure. You've faced your face. And you've seen your profile as others see it. You've learned all the tricks to make you more beautiful than you are—how to use illusion
to play up your good features and play down those hat are less than perfect.
So, it's time to pick the perfect hairdo for you. Should you wear a high and mighty do? Or is a flat top better for you? Should your style be wide and handsome, or sleek as a cap? Should you diminish your brow with bangs, or accentuate it with a pompadour? Should your locks sweep up from the nape, or should they cuddle into it?
What length is right for you? Should your hair be short, or upswept to elongate your neck? Or should you wear it longish with waves snuggling around your too thin or too long throat?
Here are twenty fabulous hairdos. Look at them carefully. Pick and choose as though you were shopping for an important dress. Study each sketch. Jot down the good features about the "do's" you like . . . then compare them with your features. Ask yourself if they fit in with your way of life. Do they compliment your face, your profile, your figure?
Don't make the mistake of doing your hair "just like" all of your friends do. Don't copy Jackie Kennedy, or Mary Gotrich, or your favorite singer.
Do your own hair styling. Do what's best for YOU. Don't be a look-alike. The purpose of this book is to help you build up your own charm and beauty, to help you develop an attractive personality that's yours and yours alone.
Be individual and original. And, most of all, be your own pretty self. And watch the boys come to your door!
A word of warning: All men like pretty hair. They like it clean and glossy and fragrant. But most males shy away from extremes. So, consider your man before you pick an exaggerated "do."

Don't sit there and dream—do something!
Sketch by Pond’s Good Grooming Service
The Cover Girl
by clairol (see cover)
This is what it means to you:
The Cover Girl has the natural daytime look that so many girls dream of. And yet her hairdo can be tamed down and glamorized for dress-up. It was designed for the oval face but it is versatile enough to be worn (with slight variations) by many other face types.
For Daytime:
Use a little Creme Hairdress on shaft of hair. Then back-comb hair (or tease), to give it volume. Brush all hair back, and then brush the back and sides from underneath. Now sweep a side bang across forehead.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Handle hair as above. Then sweep side hair behind ears and secure curved end of bang with a Tip-Top jeweled comb.
The Cover Girl
BY CLAIROL (see cover)
Your hair:
About 5 inches long from crown, tapering to 12 to 2 inches at nape; this is a blunt cut
The color is Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath—Flaxen Blonde shade and was applied on light brown shade
What to use:*
Jumbo curlers at front, back and sides (size 0)
Medium rollers at nape (size 3) Pin curls over ears (Tip-Top No. 15)
How to do it:
Front—place four curlers over brow. Roll three to right side and one to left.
Back—place seven curlers horizontally over crown. Roll five to right side and two to left. Place other rollers down back as sketched. Last three, at nape, should be medium size.
Sides—roll one curler down at each side ending with pin curls over ears.
- Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's size 1 Brush Curlers and Quickie Pins; size 3 Brush Curlers and Quickie Pins and #15 Pin Curl Clips.

TWO-WAY HAIRDO
The High, Wide and Handsome
BY MR. ENNY, HOUSE OF REVLON
This is what it means to you:
A lovely soft frame for a girl with an oval face who wants to look chic—and pretty. It calls for fairly long, lustrous hair. The one setting can turn from deliberately naive to charmingly sophisticated.
For Daytime:
Back-brush the hair from one side to the other and down the back. Flip it up from a low part to a soft pompadour, with a flipped turn on top. Smooth and curve one section from the inner edge of the eyebrow down over the widest part of the cheekbone and turn out in a deeply waved swoop. On the other side, make a bouffant wave ending in an outward curl.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Arrange the top as for the daytime hairdo. Smooth back over the tips of the ears and arrange the back in a French twist, or anchor the hair smoothly with jeweled combs.
The High, Wide and Handsome
BY MR. ENNY, HOUSE OF REVLON
Your Hair:
6 to 8 inches at crown, about 4 inches at nape
What to use:*
Jumbo rollers front and back (size 1) Medium size at sides (size 2)
4 inch at nape (size 3)
How to do it:
Front—roll on four jumbos from temple to temple, all in same direction.
Sides—roll down from temple to just above tip of ear. Make two back-turned pin curls in front and in back of ears.
Back—use jumbo rollers down from crown to above nape. Turn back hair under on small size rollers.
*Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's Brush Rollers or Magnetic Rollers with bob pins.

The Wing Ding
BY ENRICO CARUSO
This is what it means to you:
If your face is pear-shaped, you need a hairdo that widens your forehead, narrows your jaw line. The Wing Ding does this by focusing on a line that cuts cleanly across your hairline, swoops in at the top of your cheeks and then curves out and up, to diminish your jaw.
For Daytime:
Back-comb side locks very lightly and brush up to pouf out at the sides. Keep the top smooth and slightly lifted. Back hair should hug the nape of the neck.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Brush off forehead and lift slightly with rat-tail comb (Tip-Top's No. 293 is excellent). Turn a large eyecatcher curl forward and up. Arrange sides in smooth, half waves onto the cheeks. Back-brush hair at crown, smooth gently, and comb hair flat at the neck line.
HAIRDO HOW-TO
The Wing Ding BY ENRICO CARUSO
Your hair:
Top, U inches, crown about 5 inches, sides 3 inches, all tapered to 1 inch at nape
What to use:*
1s inch curlers
How to do it:
Front and sides—use four rollers over brow and four over crown. Roll them from left to right. Use double row of curlers on each side and roll them down.
Back—roll straight down—three curlers should do it—from crown to above nape. Finish with one row of large pincurls, turning them as indicated in the diagram.
* Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top size 4 or 5 Brush Curlers.

TWO-WAY HAIRDO
The Upsa-Daisy
BY JACY DE PARIS OF THE WALDORF
This is what it means to you:
A round face needs height in its coif to give the illusion of more length. Side swoops on the cheeks can give a more oval effect by diminishing the width. If the hair is piled very high, like the evening version of the High Flyer, side swoops are not needed because the whole head silhouette becomes oval in proportion.
For Daytime:
Tease the top, then brush in one motion up at the forehead, then down in a smooth curve from end of eye and over ear. Tease the back and brush up in full, flipped pouff.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Back-brush the top, then swing back hair and right side up to join forward moving tendrils or half wave. Brush left side from the temple in a sweeping bandeau across the forehead. Try a Tip-Top Hi-Style Clip Comb high on the side. Very glamourous—and it will help anchor the swirl.
HAIRDO HOW-TO
The Upsa-Daisy
BY JACY DE PARIS OF THE WALDORF
Your hair:
5 to 6 inches
What to use:*
Medium size—3 inch curlers for front
and lower back
Jumbo curlers for back top layers
How to do it:
Front—set three curlers over brow and roll from left to right. Above these place two curlers horizontally and roll down.
Sides—Make pin curls as indicated on diagram.
Back—place two jumbo curlers at top, two rows of medium curlers below. Roll all up and finish with large pin curls.
*Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's size 2 Brush Curlers with Quickie Pins and size 1 Brush Curlers with Quickie Pins. Available in packages at 59¢ and $1.00.

The Pretty Pixie
BY MICHEL DE PARIS
This is what it means to you:
If your face is heart-shaped and you have an extra-high forehead—the Pixie is for you. The bangs hide your forehead, and the ear-length hair will elongate the rest of your face—emphasizing your pretty little chin.
For Daytime:
Hair is parted way down on one side. Then it is brushed smoothly over the crown and down over the forehead, to form diagonal bangs. It is then flipped in at the temple and out and away over the ear. The other side is brushed in the complete opposite way —it is pouffed out and brought into the cheek and topped with one of Tip-Top's velvet bows.
|
|
Twenty Fabulous 2-Way Hairdos
For Dress-up:
Uneven bangs are swept down over forehead. Sides are teased—to form puffs. Hair on crown is swirled upward and around. Anchor top pouff-swirl with Tip-Top's jewelled clip comb.
Pixie
BY MICHEL DE PARIS
Your hair:
4 to 5 inches
Should be medium to coarse
What to use:*
Jumbo curlers front and crown Medium to jumbo size in back Pin curl clips sides and nape
How to do it:
Front—place five rollers over brow, five over crown, vertically, and roll to one side.
Left side—roll curlers down with pin curls curving toward face.
Back—roll down, ending with 2 rows of pin curls going to one side.
Right side—one roller down, two rollers up.
* Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's size 0 Brush Curlers with Quickie Pins and size 1 Brush Curlers with Quickie Pins plus No. 13 Stainless Steel Curl Clips. All available in popular priced packages.

The Impish Elf
BY ENRICO CARUSO
This is what it means to you:
A natural look—soft and pretty, but with a hint of an imp, just to keep it from making you too sugary sweet. This is a hairdo designed for an oval face, but could be equally becoming to a girl with a heart-shaped face, or a round one. It is so simple and easy, you might just set it once and flip it this way and that to see if it works for you—whether your face is round, square or pear-shaped.
For Daytime:
Tease the top hair slightly to give a lift to your hair from crown to brow. Brush back over crown— very lightly. Then, with hand under front hair, brush gently and smoothly into a rolled wave on the forehead. Sides are teased just a little under the hair at the temples, then curved outward and down onto the cheeks. The back is brushed into a sleek line to the nape, with no curl.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Starting about 32 inches back of the crown, brush all hair in one swoop, curving down at the neckline and behind your ears. Brush deep bangs forward, low enough to cover your eyebrows. Separate them into a fringed or jagged effect with your fingers or a rat-tail comb. To keep this in perfect order, spray before venturing into the wind.
The Impish Elf
BY ENRICO CARUSO
Your hair:
Top about 32 inches; crown shaped U inches at the sides, 5 inches at the center; sides of the head, 3 inches, tapered to 2 inches at the ears; nape, tapered from 3 to 12 inches at center.
What to use:*
Medium size curlers Bob pins
How to do it:
Front—turn three curlers in the same direction, the middle one directly above the nose.
Sides—on one side, starting with level of crown, roll three curlers down to ear-top level; repeat a slightly slanted row back of this. On the other side, start your curlers slightly higher and, using four, set to the top of the ear.
Back—use five curlers over crown, moving in same direction as the front. In center back use three curlers to above nape. Finish with pin curls.
*Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's size 1 Foam Cushion Curlers and No. 125 Sof-Tip Bob Pins.

The Curvaceous Side Flip
BY JULIUS CARUSO
This is what it means to you:
If your face is oblong—try curves to round out and soften the angular lines. The Side Flip draws attention away from proportions that may be too strong. The soft fluffy look, flipped out at the side, gives width across the brow, softens your forehead and makes you look maddeningly feminine.
For Daytime:
Brush hair from the top of one ear over the top of the head. With your brush, flip up wisps on one side and in the back. On the other side, make a kiss curl on your cheek.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Back-brush entire head so that hair lifts from your head with an asymmetrical movement. Bring one lock from the crown in a swirl over your forehead, add flair with a Tip-Top velvet bow.
HAIRDO HOW-TO
The Curvaceous Side Flip
BY JULIUS CARUSO
Your hair:
Eartip length, or an inch or so longer
What to use:*
Medium size curlers
How to do it:

Sides—from temple, two curlers, ending at tip of ear.
Back—roll down and end with one row of pin curls.
*Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Tip's size 1
Curl-O-Matics.

The Boy-Meets-Girl
BY CHARLES OF THE RITZ
This is what it means to you:
A perfect warm weather hairdo! It's cool and short at the nape. Then it rises to a pinwheel pouff on top. It was designed for the oval face. But it could make the heart-shape look very pixie indeed.
For Daytime:
Brush the back neatly down, and form a soft puff at the sides—dipping onto the temple. The top is brushed into a swirl—up, away and around to form a hollow roll off center.
|
|
Again, brush the back neatly down. Then, from high on the crown, brush top and sides forward. Curve a little guiche in front of each ear. And sepa-Comb that looks like a pretty golden dogwood rate those side-swooping bangs with a Tip-Top Clip blossom.
HAIRDO HOW-TO

The Peak of Chic
BY MICHEL KAZAN
This is what it means to you:
If your face is square you can easily adapt its shape to your heart's desire. Start with a design that breaks the straight lines, softens your forehead and gives a pretty lifted look to your cheeks. Actually, you should choose a hairdo that makes the most of your eyes. Here's a good way to do it. For Daytime:
Brush all hair up, then swirl to one side. Turn curls in an ascending line from the corner of the eye, to the top of the ear, to hairline level, and finally to a swirling curl level with the top of your head. This draws the eye up, giving the impression of a slimmer jaw line. If you have a widow's peak, dandy. It is one of the prettiest ways to break the straight across and severe brow-line of a square face. But you don't have to be born with a peak—if you have a low hairline, you can pluck one. If you have a high forehead, you can use an artificial embellishment— (That's a tiny bit of a sort of wig!)
|
|
For Dress-up:
Sweep your hair up, then make a crown of curls from temple to temple, just about three inches above your hairline. You will find this arrangement easier to place if you tease the hair on the top of the head enough to give a high important background for the curls.
HAIRDO HOW-TO
The Peak of Chic BY MICHEL KAZAN
Your hair:
From 5 inches at forehead, graduating to 1 inch at nape of neck
What to use:*
Front—jumbo snap-ons
Back and sides—medium snap-ons and pin curl clips
How to do it:
Front—roll four curlers from right to left.
Sides—roll two horizontal curlers up at eyeline. Use pin curls on both sides, up from hairline to front of ear in direction indicated.
Back—roll four curlers from right to left over crown. Pin curl entire back, from right side, ending behind left ear.
*Editor's note: We recommend Tip-Top's size 1 and size 2 Snap-on Curlers plus No. 18 Cone Center Curl Clips.

The Pageboy Pouff
BY KENNETH OF LILLY DACHE
This is what it means to you:
If you want a hairdo which will give you the utmost in variety—the Pageboy Pouff is it. It's meant for an oval face. However, the round face can try the dress-up version. And the square face would do well to cope with the daytime style.
For Daytime:
All of your hair—from temple to temple—should be teased and then brushed back into a smooth pompadour. Both sides will need a bit of teasing, too. Then they will be brushed out and back again to the cheeks —to form a head-hugging pageboy.
84
|
|
For Dress-up:
All hair is swept upward. The sides are brushed neat and smooth and then tucked under a blossom of a pompadour. It's really a crown with a fresh rose tucked into the top.
HAIRDO HOW-TO

TWO-WAY HAIRDO
The Pomp-and-Pouff
BY CHARLES OF THE RITZ
This is what it means to you:
Do you like a high and mighty hairdo? This convertible one is particularly effective for the square face. It will give all of the rounded lines that a squarish face needs—plus the height. And the dress-up version is made even higher with a chignon hair piece.
For Daytime:
The pouff is achieved with a little teasing. Then it is puffed high over the crown and away from the forehead. Now it is brushed smooth and draped over to one side—ending in a flapper curl.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Again, a bit of teasing is indicated. Then the hair is brushed smoothly away from the forehead into a high pompadour. Now for drama—the hairdo is topped with a small hair piece which is draped into a hollow roll—like a doughnut.

BY HELENA RUBINSTEIN
This is what it means to you:

|
|
For Dress-up:

The Grecian Princess
BY MR. ERIC OF WALTER FLORELL

The evening version of the Grecian Princess requires a perfect oval face, but the daytime style is very becoming to many other shapes. Analyze the lines and you will see that it is right for the round, the oblong, even the heart-shaped.
For Daytime:
Brush your hair loosely towards the front, separating soft curly strands to give a wind-swept look. Brush it back and up on the forehead, teasing it a little to give fullness.
|

For Dress-up:
This classic Grecian arrangement is brushed to the back and teased to give enough body to hold the puffed-out shape. The forehead is much the same as the daytime version. At the sides and nape, small tendrils curl out softly.

BY CHARLES OF THE RITZ
This is what it means to you:

|

TWO-WAY HAIRDO
The Cleopatra
BY MR. ERIC OP WALTER FLORELL
This is what it means to you:
Here's a hairdo that practically everyone wants to try, because it is new and different from anything we're used to. This Cleopatra was designed for an oval face. But it could be modified—especially in the daytime version—to be right for the diamond, the heart, and even the round. Try both when you have time and are in a mood to experiment. If it's wrong —just brush it away! For Daytime:
Tease the top hair gently and arrange it in a smooth cushion from the side part and down over the left eye. Bring wisps of hair forward on the forehead from the part. Brush the sides in a soft, casual forward line.
|
|
For Dress-up:
This is a very smooth style. Tease the hair firmly for great fullness, then brush lightly over the top. Turn the ends in for the traditional square, straight line of this Egyptian coif. Side swept bangs descend from the side part.
The Cleopatra
BY MR. ERIC OF WALTER FLORELL
Your hair:
6 inches from crown, graduated to 3 inches at nape
What to use:*
Large brush curlers
How to do it:
Front—make a side part above outer corner of left eye. From the part, place four curlers and roll away from part.
Sides—on the shallow side of the part place one curler and roll down from part. Beneath this, make two rolls, turning them toward the face. On the right side, turn vertically-set rollers toward the face.
Back—set curlers down from crown to nape.

TWO-WAY HAIRDO
The Carefree
BY JULIUS CARUSO
This is what it means to you:
If your hair is curly and your forehead a bit narrower than the typical heart-shape, try the Carefree. Your hair should be eartip length on the sides, two inches at the temples, and about one inch in back, on the neck. It is brushed up and out to widen the line of your forehead and to emphasize your chin.
For Daytime:
All you do is brush and comb your hair, then toss it up and out with the brush. Use your fingers to arrange the line at the temples. For active sports, this one is designed to satisfy the most disheveled beauty in a hurry.
|
|
For Dress-up:
Back-brash or tease your hair from back to front. Smooth the top layer with your brush, gently. Arrange curved tendrils with fingers and comb.
The Carefree

The Flirty Pouff
BY MICHEL DE PARIS
This is what it means to you:
If your face is slightly squared off, here are nice rounded lines for you. The top curve of the Flirty Pouff gives height to your squarish face. The fluff ed-out side wing and the wispy bangs give an illusion of roundness.
For Daytime:
Tease hair a bit on top and then brush it smoothly away from brow. Brush it in a clean sweep behind one ear. On the other side, swoop it away from temple, curve it back to the cheek. Then, flip the ends out and away.

For Dress-up:
Tease hair gently all over crown. Then brush it back smoothly to form an all-over pouff. Leave a pretty spray of bangs and separate them from the pouff with a Tip-Top Bandeau.
