MEMO from: the Editor to: You

This book is designed for girls (of any age) who have beauty on their minds—or heads, that is.

Of course, if yon have a glorious head of hair ... if the texture is silky . . . and the color "just right" . . . and if you've found the perfect hairdo for you—and can set it like an expert—you don't need this book.

As a matter of fact, if all of this were true, you wouldn't even be reading the above paragraph.

This book does not mean to preach or to make a sermon. The aim is to give exquisite advice. Now, in Webster's Third New International Dictionary, "exquisite" is defined as: "carefully selected or sought out . . . ingeniously devised."

This book is following old Mr. Webster's suggestion. We want to help you select your hairdo carefully. We want you to seek out the right "do" for you. And, most of all, we want you to devise it ingeniously.

Of course, the most important tiling is for you to know yourself. That's why the first part of the book gives you tips on how to judge your beauty personality. Of course, you could go to a clairvoyant or a beauty expert. But what fun to be your own beauty fortune-teller!

It's been said that a girl's fortune is in her face. We doubt this—unless the face is properly surrounded with a pretty coif. Now, this book wishes to suggest ways and means for YOU to have a more flattering coif. And, as you read along, you will find how important many parts of your body are to achieving a so-called perfect hairdo.

As you read on, you will find out how many of your facial features—even your body size—can influence the right hairdo for you.

And would you ever imagine that your heel height could make a difference? Well it can! So can your skirt length. You'll read all about how to balance your figure, later on.

But the main things to watch are your facial features and your profile. You'll discover that it's quite simple to be a self-analyst. And that it is fun to discover your own beauty personality—and then do something about it.

Although this book is primarily devoted to hair, it also includes other beauty hints. You will find that you can be an artist with your cosmetics. By little tricks of light and dark colors, you can highlight or diminish certain parts of your face. (You can, by magic, make a too-round face appear to be an almost perfect oval.)

But enough about illusion. This book contains twenty lovely hairdos—so that you can pick and choose exactly the right one for you. They were designed by America's top coiffeurs—ten famous names. They include: Mr. Kenneth of Lilly Dache, Mr. Eric of Walter Florell, Mr. Enny of the House of Revlon; also, Michel Kazan; both Enrico Caruso and Julius Caruso; and both Michel de Paris and Jacy de Paris; and, of course, the Charles of the Ritz and Helena Rubinstein salons.

All of the hairdos were styled for the American girl who wants to look individual and lovely. Each hair stylist had a particular facial shape in mind. And has manipulated the flow of hair (as a dress designer does with fabric) so that the best part of the facial anatomy is played up —and the lesser parts are played down.

And best of all, each and every style has explicit diagrams showing exactly how to set each and every hairdo (including the cover). The diagrams show you how to roll up the front, back and sides. And the descriptions will explain this—as well as what length your hair should be and how to brush it out.

All of this talk of beauty and glamour is like putting the cart before the horse. Later in the book, you will find solid information about how to take care ... of your hair. No pretty hairdo can be accomplished unless the basic material is right (any more than a smart dress can be made of tired-out or faded fabric). Tour hair must be in good condition before you can even attempt a new "do". It must be clean and healthy—not too dry, not too oily, not too thin. And the color must be right for you. All of this information is at your command in Fart IIL

Later on, you’ll find tips about a Tip-Top hairdo wardrobe. Also, you'll find out (now that you've become a beauty expert) what fun it will be to hold a beauty clinic in your home!

So, after reading this book, we expect you to be—pretty as a picture!
